The maid who loved a soldier.

The soldier who defied a Tsar.

The Tsar who doomed a nation…

Inga is lucky to live the sheltered life of a maid in the Kremlin palace, but her plight is bleak at best. For Ivan the Terrible is the most notorious ruler ever to sit the throne of Russia.

When an English soldier comes to court, asking questions about his mother’s death years before, Inga is handed her first real chance at happiness. But can it endure?

Ivan tramples all in his path, leaving only death and blood in his wake. Taras asks too many questions, and his independent attitude frightens Inga. In Russia’s Imperial court, that kind of arrogance gets people killed.

Will Taras and Inga survive, or will they become unnoticed casualties of Tsars and Caesars, in a time period the world has forgotten?

Find out now! Because everyone loves a doomed love affair in the midst of violence and intrigue.

"The storyline is gripping from the beginning and pulls you effortlessly through to the end! Wonderfully written!! Definitely would recommend!"—R.R.

Author Interview

What made you want to write historical romance?

I’ve always been a history buff. I find it fascinating. I’m also someone who tends to wallow in tragedy, so historical fiction is right up my alley. I never entirely understood how those two things relate, but another writer at a conference said something very interesting to me.

Historical fiction tends to revolve around major historical events, but not good ones. Wars, dictators, tragedies. It’s like we, as a human race, harbor a communal sadness about things that have happened in the past. Even if they aren’t a part of our native countries, and we didn’t live during the time period they happened in, we feel a responsibility because we, as humans, allowed these terrible things to happen. We tells stories about them to keep them from happening again. I identify strongly with that. That’s why I write historical fiction and romance.

And why Russia and Ivan the Terrible?

In college, I minored in history. The program was relatively simple. Only a few required classes and then X amount of general history credits. Looking through the class list, I found classes on Russian history. I didn’t know anything about Russian history, so I decided to try it out. The class was taught by LeRae Larkin, who wrote the foreword for Citadels of Fire. She was an amazing professor and her passion for the subject proved infectious. I fell in love with Russian history in general and Ivan in particular.

I remember having an idea for a story (Taras’s) and while I didn’t have all the details mapped out, I knew it would be a trans-generational mystery. But I kept trying to place it in the Communist era. Each time, I hit walls with the plot. Even outside of Russian history, one of my favorite eras to learn about is the Middle Ages. With that in mind, I picked the entire story up, pulled it out of the Communist era and plunked it down in the medieval era, into the court of Ivan the Terrible. And the entire thing just clicked into place.

Who would enjoy this story?

History buffs, anyone who loves, sweeping, epic tales, readers of historical romance, and anyone who’d like to know something of Russian history.

Citadels of Fire Kremlins Book 1 edition by KL Conger Romance eBooks

I enjoy historical fiction, but was hesitant about reading this book, as I know little detail of Russian history, but enough to fear the book may include gory details. This author presents situations gently without detailing love relations and fearful events.

I was able to find supporting historical events through online research for whatever I needed to know more about. Ms. Hill exposes early experiences of Ivan the Terrible, and gives information about life behind, within, and around the Kremlin through her characters. She describes harsh climate conditions and made it possible to understand tasks and hardships that were endured and adapted to.

I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, which may resolve a family mystery, loving relationships, the fate of characters I've come to understand, and,of course, more of Ivan and those he affected during his reign.
Thank you, Ms Hill, for a book that leaves the details of brutality and intimacy for the reader's determination.

Did I enjoy this book I did.

This story is set in Russia during the 1500s. Ivan the Great has died while his son, Ivan (later named the Terrible) was three years old. His country was in chaos, and even as a child, there were multiple assassination attempts on his life. He grows up to be the Czar of Russia and wages war against his neighbors.

I know little about Russian history, but from what little I gleaned from the internet, the author sticks pretty close to the facts. Into this fascinating story he weaves beautifully developed characters with believable relationships.

It must have been hard to develop a story where Taras the soldier falls in love with a housemaid, Inga, under the roof of Ivan the Terrible. But Hill pulls it off. He tells a tale of love and war, loyalty and betrayal, murderous wolves and insane tyrants. What more could you ask for?

Would I recommend it Yes, but be advised my e-reader indicated 5,309 pages. That feels about right. It’s long!

The storyline is gripping from the beginning and pulls you effortlessly through to the end! Wonderfully written!! Definitely would recommend!
Well written but you will have to buy the next book to finish the story. I found it too depressing but If you like this kind of history it would be a good choice for you! I like more light in my reading I guess.
Incredible, epic read. 368 pages & over 13 hours of reading/listening but seems longer as it is so detailed & entertaining. I have to go into book 2 next!
To me this was a fascinating look at a time in Russian history that was a mystery to me. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Taras and Inga but was repulsed by the behavior of Ivan. Russia's history is full of bloody conquests but they can also be a strong ally.
This story deserves more than 3 stars, but the grammar in this book is horrible.
The main characters in this book are fictional but the historical events are based on things that actually happened. The book revolves around Inga and Taras who live in 16th century Russia during the time of Ivan the Terrible. Inga was raised as a servant in the Kremlin and Taras was born of the upper class. They knew each other briefly as children but after Taras' mother dies under mysterious circumstances, he moves away to England. Years later as an adult, he returns to Russia in an attempt to learn more about her death. Taras and Inga reunite and fall for each other but their social statuses make it difficult for them to have a normal relationship. The book doesn't completely tell you what becomes of them so if you want to find out more, you have to buy book 2.
The romantic aspect of the book was nice but I enjoyed the history much more. I especially liked reading about the servant life that Inga lived as a Kremlin maid since that part was very detailed. The book was awesome but I haven't decided if I will buy book 2 just yet.
