What if to sleep means to die?
A disease, the Death Sleep, has seized humanity. The Death Sleep struck slowly at first, but then it suddenly accelerated. Everyone succumbed to its devastating effects–violence, loss of reason, intermittent sleep, and finally death. Inevitably, everyone fell asleep, except Art Sand, a doctor specializing in Alzheimer's Disease.
Art Sand finds that an experimental drug can stave off the Death Sleep. Once fully awake, Art is horrified to discover a world ending as though Armageddon has arrived. As the chaos yields to quietude, Art discovers another survivor, a young girl named Maya who doesn’t need the drug to live. As Art and Maya search for answers, they encounter unexpected dangers. And they discover many more survivors. But are they a hostile, new race of human beings?
A lyrical literary novel, A M M powerfully captures the stark landscape of a post–apocalyptic world, and the hope and nightmare of a survivor.

A M M edition by Nick Totem Literature Fiction eBooks

I must admit that I was quite skeptical at first with the claim of the author using his own medical experience to add substance to the book, as I often find that authors who try to mix their real professions into their writing often do not execute it very well, but even early on in the book I found that Nick Totem does a great job of blending his own expertise into the story that ultimately adds a sense of realism which, in turn, made the story feel more dynamic and with a deeper depth, for me personally.

Of course, there’s much more to the book than the aforementioned, but what I admire the most about “A M M” is that it genuinely is unique and original while still staying true to the sci-fi/dystopian genre. I have read my fair share of books with a dystopian theme, even many that center around worlds ravaged by a wide variety of diseases, but I can’t think of any that are similar to this.

A M M edition by Nick Totem Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A M M by Nick Totem reminded me quite a bit of I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, one of my all-time favorite books. Right out of the gate, the plot for A M M, as well as being in Art's head, is absolutely stressful, terrifying, and intriguing all at once. I didn't even realize I was gripping the book so tightly in anticipation until after I finished Chapter 3 (that was intense!). I was immediately invested in this clever and inventive book. I needed to know what was going on, what had already happened, and how Art and Maya were going to navigate through this world, now vastly different if every way. That is, navigate until there is no longer a life of which to drive through such a place. Mr. Totem writes in such an intellectual manner and he is remarkably talented in painting a picture of the scenes and making the characters very tangible; something I value a lot when reading a fictional piece in this genre. A M M also displayed shades of an intelligent and adept twist on The Walking Dead television plot in some places. Without revealing any spoilers, I have to say that I got chills when the meaning of the book's title is revealed, and Maya's story is just as compelling as the mystery of the Death Sleep. Despite a few typos, I cannot stress how much I thoroughly enjoyed A M M. Books that challenge the reader, leave room for interpretation and don't dumb down the premise or vernacular are worth having, and A M M by Nick Totem is undoubtedly a novel that owns this description. The final chapter was very fitting; not forced or sudden. The book had the perfect amount of closure and wonder. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the other works I've mentioned, as well as readers who appreciate great works of scientific fiction. Mr. Totem is a very gifted author and I expect to see more of his work on shelves. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A M M

Interesting novel with new approach, but full of surprises. The next possibility chapter of the Human Race?
Lyrical, beautiful prose, complex storyline that's gripping and suspenseful. A unique masterful book, touching and thought-provoking.
This is a must read, even for those that would usually not like these types of books. The book had a solid storyline, as well as interesting characters. As an avid reader, this book rates above average for me. Unfortunately, in the middle of the book, I felt as if it was a little rushed, and I was a little confused. Fortunately, later in the book, it explained more, and I was no longer confused. Overall, this was a great book. The little confusion I felt for about 15 pages was not enough to hurt the actual storyline of the book, which is why I gave a five star rather than a four star.
I found the beginning of the book interesting & entertaining and then, it seemed to stall.I don't like books that seem to just end because the author lost interest or ran out of ideas and that is how I felt about the ending of the book.
Great start, exciting mid and very, very good (though a little hanging, cause I want more) ending. Nick Totem delivers one post apocalyptic story with a unique twist. A mix between I a Legend and The Happening, the author gave me a taste of scientific mystery. No virus, no holocaust, no war and no zombie. But still a great journey through life, family, hope and love. The mix of mystery and medical science in this book is great. Kudos tnd the author! Hope to read books like this often.
I think I read somewhere that the story was written by a physician. I found some parts tedious, so I skipped them. Maybe it was TOO technical for me. A "death sleep" killing the people, would first make people fall asleep, deep slumber, but if they woke up, some would become violent. And then again, unexpectedly fall asleep, eventually never to wake. The speaker of this story, a divorced physician, is in this process of waking and sleeping. He lives alone. He gave up his practice to become a researcher, his speciality, Alzheimer's disease. Serendipity...his only daughter was epileptic and as he was thinking of ways to keep himself awake, he remembers an epi-pen from his supplies for his daughter. He uses this pen and realizes it works to keep him awake and alive longer. This is a story of many more discoveries, and one that is unique and the central theme. So there, I didn't give too much away. I loved how it ended, and the premise of the central theme. Not too much horror, which is my favorite, but I also like to find in reading, a unique thought-provoking idea. And, of course, another way to end our species.
